Physics Discovery

Physics Discovery

About

Sponsored by the Department of Physics, these hands-on workshops are designed to teach students about the simple laws that govern the physical universe. Guided activities include investigating Newton’s laws of motion, testing effects of temperature on phase changes, making magnetism from electricity, and exploring the optics of mirrors and lenses. Activities are adjusted for age appropriateness for each group visit.

Workshop Stations:

  • Mechanics and Motion: How forces cause motion, linear motion vs. rotation, collisions between objects, conservation of energy and momentum.
  • Electricity and Magnetism: How charges attract and repel, how moving charges create magnetism, how moving magnets can create electricity.
  • Temperature and Phase Changes: Effect of temperature on atomic motion, thermal expansion and contraction, freezing and melting.
  • Waves and Optics: Wavelength vs. pitch and color, bending of light by mirrors and lenses, image formation and optical illusions.
