Psychology Discovery

Psychology Discovery

About

Students will participate in a series of hands-on activities exploring various concepts in psychology such as sensation/perception, memory, social psychology, wellbeing/emotion, and the functions of neurons in the brain.

Workshop Stations:

  • Sensation & Perception: This station is about how we take in information from the outside world (sensation) and interpret that information to make sense of the world (perception). What the eyes “see" and what the brain “sees" are related, but not necessarily the same. Through optical illusions and other activities, students will explore the relationship between sensation and perception.
  • Memory: Explore memory and learning strategies that take advantage of how the brain operates. Students will play memory games that allow them to apply these strategies to new applications.
  • Social Psychology: This station will explore conformity. How does the behavior of others influence our own? Students will participate in an activity to demonstrate the power of social norms.
  • Wellbeing & Emotion: This station explores how stress affects health and how to effectively cope with it. Students will learn about techniques to reduce stress, such as mindfulness and meditation, and how to regulate emotions.
  • The Brain: This station focuses on the brain as the centerpiece of our psychological lives. Everything psychological is simultaneously physiological. Students will engage in hands-on activities that demonstrate the functions of neurons and the brain.
