Science & Chess Festival - December 2, 2017

Nov. 16, 2017

The Flandrau Science Center is excited to be hosting the fifth annual “Chess & Science Festival” on Saturday, December 2, 2017. Admission to Flandrau and all exhibits will be free! The festival will feature an All-Girls Chess Tournament, demonstrations and activities provided by UA student science clubs, a free screening of the inspiring chess movie and an appearance by the Mayor of Tucson, Jonathan Rothschild, at 12noon.

Visitors can also enjoy our awe-inspiring planetarium shows, hands-on science exhibits, and activities that will be fun for the whole family. Hourly planetarium shows begin at 12noon, with regular price admission for planetarium shows, see schedule below for details.

The festival showcases how girls and women can excel in fields that have historically been male-dominated, like chess and science. As festival organizer and 3-time US Women’s Chess Champion Anjelina Belakovskaia describes the mission, “To organize a special and memorable event that will have a long-lasting positive influence on participants, parents and observers by promoting girls' confidence, and ability to compete in intellectual areas and achieve great success in chess and beyond – including math, science, finance, business and life!”

Several UA student clubs will provide fun science activities, including the Chemistry Club, the Neuroscience Club with their “brain zoo,” and the CATalyst Club math outreach group. Hands-on demonstrations from the Marine Discovery and Earth Science Discovery programs will also delight visitors of all ages.

A special chess film will screen in the planetarium theater at 9:45am. You can sign up girls (K-12) for the Tournament here: There are scholarship spots available for girls who need financial assistance.

The event will begin at 9am and run until 5pm. We hope you’ll bring your girls and boys to join the fun at this celebration of chess and science!
